Kyle Busch often tried to pace himself when it came to his health.
While the NASCAR driver died on May 21 at the age of 41 from an undisclosed illness, he was candid about his health issues as he wanted to stay in top form as one of racingâs most celebrated drivers.
Shortly before his death, Kyleâs familyâincluding wife Samantha Busch and children Brexton, 11, and Lennix, 4âhad shared that he had been hospitalized with âa severe illness.â
âHe is currently undergoing treatment,â the May 21 statement posted to his social media continued, âand will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.â
The two-time Cup Series had also needed medical attention just days before as heâd asked for a doctor to meet him after his race at Watkins Glen International on May 10.
âCan somebody try to find Bill Heisel? Heâs the kindred doctor guy,â Kyle was heard saying in a radio transmission shared on X by FOX: NASCAR. âTell him I need him after the race, please.â
Kyleâwho was dealing with a sinus cold during the raceâadded, âIâm gonna need a shot.â
The driver did not share what kind of shot he needed from his doctor at the time.
Patrick McDermott/Getty ImagesEarlier this year, Kyle was hospitalized after severely cutting his leg when a stool he was standing on broke.
As he recalled on his wifeâs podcast Certified Oversharer in March, âI land on my feet and Iâm holding on the walls, like, âIâm good, everythingâs fine, Iâm alright.ââ
But within moments his son Brexton had pointed out that his dad was very much not good as his leg was heavily bleeding.
âAs soon as he said âyouâre bleeding,â I look down and I look and itâs not like youâre bleeding like a nosebleed,â Kyle said. âIt is like pouring. Youâre gushing.â
Thankfully, the deep cutâwhich needed 24 stitchesâdidnât hinder his plans to compete in the 2026 Cook Out Clash at the Bowman Gray Stadium in February.
James Gilbert/Getty ImagesUnfortunately the same could not be said about his injuries in 2015 when he sustained a compound leg fracture and broken foot during a crash, causing him to miss 11 races that season. And while he was disappointed to sit out, he was thankful that the injury wasnât worseâespecially as it occurred shortly before his son Brexton was born.
âI could have had a serious neck or head injury or even worse,â he told ESPN in 2015. âTo us, we pray to God and thankful for it, that Iâm still here and actually able to be part of the birth of our son.â
And Kyle was especially grateful to have Samantha by his side during his recovery.
âSamantha and I share a lot of respect and love for one another, but I donât think anything has come as close as this experience that weâve had to deal with, with her being there by my side and helping me,â he said. âItâs been awesome to have her, just her helping me.â
