Celtic Thunder has shared a deeply moving tribute video honoring late member George “Big George” Donaldson, featuring never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage that has stirred strong emotions among fans around the world.

Though many years have passed since his sudden death, the video makes one thing clear: George is still profoundly missed—not only by those who knew him personally, but by countless fans who were touched by his voice, warmth, and presence on stage.

George Donaldson, born February 1, 1968, in Glasgow, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 46. A devoted husband to his wife Carolyn and a loving father to his daughter Sarah, George was one of nine children and a self-taught musician inspired by his late father, Bernard. Before joining Celtic Thunder, he spent more than two decades building a respected career in Glasgow’s folk music scene, performing widely and collaborating with renowned artists such as Jim McCann and Phil Coulter.
In 2007, George joined Celtic Thunder after impressing producers Sharon Browne and Phil Coulter. As the group’s only Scotsman and a proud family man, he quickly became a cornerstone of the ensemble. Known for his gentle humor, dependability, and heartfelt performances, George connected deeply with audiences during every tour and recording. His signature solos—including “Caledonia,” “The Old Man,” and “My Boy”—remain some of the most emotional and beloved moments in Celtic Thunder’s history.

Outside the group, George enjoyed a successful solo career, earning multiple Irish Music Awards and releasing acclaimed albums such as The White Rose. He cherished meeting fans around the world and was widely admired for his kindness, storytelling, and ability to make people feel seen and valued.

The newly released tribute video prompted an outpouring of emotion from fans, many of whom said the sense of loss has never faded. “A great loss, not only to Celtic Thunder but to the world in general,” one longtime supporter wrote. Another shared, “I didn’t know the man personally, but I felt he was still a friend.” Many echoed the sentiment that while Celtic Thunder has continued, the group was forever changed by his absence.
Fans repeatedly described George as a “Gentle Giant,” praising his voice, his ability to connect with audiences, and the warmth he brought to every performance. “Gone but never forgotten,” one comment read, while another said, “As long as his music lives on, he’ll never truly be gone.”

Today, as fans remember what would have been George Donaldson’s 49th birthday, the message is unanimous: though he may be gone, his legacy endures. Through his music, his spirit, and the memories he created, George Donaldson remains forever in the hearts of Celtic Thunder fans around the world.
