Michael Bublé surprised football fans around the world by making an unexpected appearance at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Canada, prompting jokes online that the holiday music icon had been “defrosted” months ahead of his usual Christmas season return.
The 50-year-old singer took center stage at Toronto Stadium ahead of Canada’s opening Group B match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, delivering a soulful performance of Sam Cooke’s classic “Bring It On Home to Me” in front of thousands of supporters and a global television audience.
Known to many fans as the unofficial soundtrack of the holiday season thanks to his hugely popular Christmas music catalog, Bublé’s appearance seven months before December immediately caught viewers off guard.
Social media quickly lit up with reactions as fans tried to process the surprise performance.

Bublé’s performance formed part of a star-studded celebration before Canada’s first match of the tournament. Surrounded by the flags of all 48 competing nations, the Canadian singer warmed up the crowd with his rendition of Cooke’s classic as supporters packed into the stadium for the historic occasion.
He was not the only major Canadian star featured during the ceremony. Alanis Morissette followed by taking center stage to perform the Canadian national anthem, while the opening festivities also featured appearances from Alessia Cara, Nora Fatehi, Vegedream, Sanjoy, Elyanna, and Jessie Reyez.
The spectacle began with dancers in traditional dress and drummers performing a tribute to Canada’s Indigenous communities, while William Prince welcomed fans from around the world before the musical performances got underway.
Fans entering the venue were greeted by a giant Canadian flag stretched across the pitch and an enormous golden football at its center, creating a sea of red throughout the stadium. The ceremony was one of three separate opening celebrations staged across the 2026 World Cup’s host nations of Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Earlier in the tournament, Mexico’s ceremony featured performances by Shakira and Burna Boy, while the United States celebration in Los Angeles included appearances from Katy Perry, Future, LISA, Anitta, Rema, and Tyla, with celebrities including Tom Cruise and David Beckham also in attendance.
While Canada’s opening match ended in a tense 1-1 draw after Cyle Larin scored a dramatic equalizer, much of the early conversation online centered around Bublé’s surprise appearance.
