Hannah Harper had viewers (and judge Carrie Underwood) in tears when she arrived to her American Idol audition and sang an original song called “String Cheese,” which she wrote while dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of her third child.

In February 2019, Devon was seriously injured in a car accident. Per a GoFundMe page, he suffered a collapsed lung and fractured back in the crash and had to be airlifted to St. Louis.

The crash happened after Devon’s pickup truck slid on ice, overturned, and rolled into a fence, per the West Plains Daily Quill. The outlet reported that Devon also had a broken ankle and spent four days in the hospital.

Family and friends gathered to support Devon and Hannah at a fundraiser in early April 2019, as Devon sustained his injuries as he and his wife were awaiting the arrival of their first child.

Shortly after the accident, Hannah wrote on Instagram, “February 1st was one of the worst days of our lives, the thought of not waking up to you every morning hit me hard. I was in a car for 10 minutes before I got to you and all I could think about is “what if”. What if he stops breathing before I get there, What if he can never walk again, What if I have to raise my son alone… These thoughts wouldn’t leave my mind, and I couldn’t catch my breath until I was there with you.”

How many kids does Hannah Harper have?

Hannah and Devon are parents to three children. Their first son, Jentry Clay Mendenhall, was born on April 12, 2019. Two more sons followed.

“My youngest is 1 and shortly after he was born I had postpartum depression,” Hannah shared on American Idol. “I was sitting on my couch wallowing. Everybody wants to touch you. I didn’t want to be touched. I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. And my son kept coming up to me saying, ‘Mama open this. Open my cheese.’”

She continued, “And I finally opened his cheese and when I did that God had put me in that place and where I was in my house was the biggest ministry I could have, and being a mom, so I gathered myself and I got up off the couch and I quit throwing a pity party and realized that was exactly what I wanted. I kind of kicked the postpartum depression in the butt, I said, ‘I ain’t doing it.’ And I wrote this song called ‘String Cheese.’”
