Presenter Davina McCall broke down in tears while hosting Comic Relief after hearing one mother’s heartbreaking story.

The 58-year-old informed BBC viewers that since the year 2000, the number of children around the world dying before their fifth birthday from preventable illnesses has been cut in half. This was down to organisations coming together to improve healthcare for millions.

However, Davina explained that, sadly, the number of children who won’t make it to their fifth birthday has been projected. She said: “This is really terrible, to go up again. Community health workers, volunteers, and mothers are giving their all to reverse this trend and here is their story of one of them.”

A pre-recorded video was then played, showing a woman called Susan who tragically lost her baby. Her daughter Michelle was born healthy, although a year and a half later, her health began to decline.

Her husband Lucas shared that when Michelle’s condition got worse, they rushed her to the hospital, where they learnt she had malaria along with a nutritional deficiency, which made her weak.

Despite the medical treatment that was given to her, Michelle sadly died.

After being left devastated by their loss, Susan went on the front line to learn about health in order to help the women in the community, to prevent the same pain she had endured.

When the clip ended, Davina was moved to tears as she struggled to get her words out. Taking a moment to compose herself, she said: “Mothers, helping mothers. I love that.

“Community health workers are needed now more than ever. Comic Relief, with your donations, is supporting projects like LWALA and people like Susan, who are helping to save lives.

“She went through something so terrible, and she decided to help others save the lives of their children. All of us watching tonight, we’ve all got something in common.

“We all made it past our fifth birthday, but isn’t that something that every child deserves? Please pick up your phones right now.”

While wiping away tears, Davina handed over to Catherine Tate, in her Nan character, to inform people how they can donate money.”
