What does that surprising kiss in The Testaments finale mean?
In the season 1 finale of the Handmaid’s Tale sequel series, which premiered on Wednesday, May 27, Becka (Mattea Conforti) and Agnes (Chase Infiniti) kiss just before Becka walks down the aisle to marry Garth (Brad Alexander).
The wedding is juxtaposed directly with Becka’s mom being charged with the murder of Dr. Grove, Becka’s dad, whom Becka killed in the previous episode. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) had suggested that Becka’s mom take responsibility for the crime to keep Becka alive, and she agreed, leaving Becka without either of her parents as she walked down the aisle.
Before saying “I do,” though, Becka has a moment alone with Agnes, her closest friend, for whom she’s long held secret romantic feelings — which she divulged to Daisy (Lucy Halliday) earlier this season. Becka and Agnes then share a surprise kiss.

“I remember reading that moment,” Conforti, 20, tells PEOPLE. “Becka finally has something good after such terrible, terrible events. It’s like there’s light for Becka. She can get something that she wants.”
There were many conversations behind the scenes about the kiss before filming. “Chase and I, and our director, Mike Barker, had extensive conversations about how to interpret this kiss,” she says.
“At the end of the day, we kind of came to the conclusion that this was a way of Agnes accepting Becka for who she is and Becka saying thank you.”
“I think it was a symbol of their undying love for each other in a very platonic and friendship way — even though Becka can interpret it as she wants,” Conforti says. “It was just such a beautiful and intimate moment to film and to be a part of. It was beautiful, yet sad.”

In contrast, the actress says that the scene that followed the kiss was “the hardest thing” she had to film.
“Walking down the aisle, given everything that [Becka] had just gone through and thinking that [she] had somehow found a way out of this terrible world, and then still having a result that Gilead has preached and taught that will be [her] fate,” Conforti says. “I think that moment was the most difficult for me, to kind of fold fully 180 degrees from the entire psychotic breakout that I had just previously had.”

The season-long crush Agnes has had on Garth, of course, complicates things, even though she’s the one who goes to the newly promoted commander to beg him to marry Becka despite Dr. Grove’s death.
“Never say never,” Infiniti, 26, tells PEOPLE about whether there’s still a chance for romance between Agnes and Garth. “I think that even though it is Gilead, it is also real-life emotions,” she says. “We’ll see.”
The Testaments is now streaming on Hulu.
