Fans are CALLING IT the most ‘explosive’ and ‘heartfelt’ interview of the year as the Bray-native details the ‘magical’ chaos of the Celtic Thunder stage and a VERY unexpected encounter with a wedding band at age 6 that changed his life forever.
He was just six years old, watching his father’s three-piece band play at a wedding, when the sound hit him.

‘I didn’t really understand what I was listening to,’ Neil Byrne admitted, ‘but I understood it was absolutely wonderful.’
Decades later, the Bray, County Wicklow native has become one of the most recognisable voices on the planet as a lead vocalist for the Irish singing sensation Celtic Thunder.
And now, in a NO-HOLDS-BARRED return to The Jim Masters Show, Neil is finally letting fans in on the chaotic, glamorous, and sometimes harrowing reality of life inside one of the world’s most beloved stage shows .
The ‘Unexpected’ Rise from Backup to Frontman
Not many people know that the man currently commanding the stage alongside Emmet Cahill, Damian McGinty, and Ronan Scolard didn’t start there .
When Neil first joined the group in 2008, he was strictly a backing musician—strumming guitar, bashing the drums, and singing the occasional harmony .
‘Every year, they’d ask me to sing a couple of songs in the middle of the show,’ he previously revealed .
But it wasn’t until 2011 that producers realised they had a secret weapon hiding in the wings.
Now, Neil performs signature tracks like “Noreen” —a heartbreaker originally written by legendary producer Phil Coulter for the late actress Natasha Richardson as a wedding gift .
‘I just about died the first time I had to sing that alone,’ Neil confesses in the interview, describing the gut-wrenching pressure of stepping into the spotlight.
The ‘Byrne & Kelly’ Gamble: Duo Dynamics and Creative Tension

But Celtic Thunder isn’t the only iron Neil has in the fire.
Alongside fellow Thunder star Ryan Kelly, Neil formed the dynamic duo Byrne & Kelly—a project that has since spawned five albums, multiple awards, and a critically lauded documentary titled Echoes .
‘We didn’t know if people would accept us outside of the Thunder umbrella,’ Neil admits regarding the nerve-wracking launch of the side project.
‘Documenting that journey for Echoes and winning awards for it? That was a very proud chapter. It felt like validation for taking the risk.’
Yet, the interview doesn’t shy away from the FRANTIC pace of the music industry. Sitting on Billboard’s Top World Artist charts in 2009 and 2011 is a distant memory compared to the grind of today’s streaming wars .
‘We have over 197,000 listeners on Spotify now,’ Neil notes, referencing the group’s growing digital footprint . ‘But nothing compares to standing on that stage when the lights go down and you hear the roar.’
The Solo Tour ‘Confession’ and the Future
As the interview unfolds, the 44-year-old singer gets deeply personal about what comes next.
Currently gearing up for his ‘It’s An Irish Thing’ solo tour kicking off in Greer, South Carolina, Neil is stepping out of the group shadow once again .
‘It’s daunting,’ he admits about flying solo. ‘There’s no one to hide behind. If the guitar is out of tune, it’s on me. If the banter is bad… well, that’s on me too!’
Jim Masters, who has known Neil since the very inception of Celtic Thunder on PBS, teases out the emotional core of the interview.
‘They’ve remained good friends ever since,’ a show insider noted, and the chemistry is palpable .
From playing to thousands in massive arenas to intimate storytelling sessions, Neil reveals he is chasing the same feeling he had at that wedding reception in Ireland at age six: the pure, unadulterated joy of sound.
What is The Jim Masters Show?
For those unfamiliar, The Jim Masters Show has become the GO-TO destination for Celtic Thunder fans in the know.
Masters originally interviewed the full ensemble during the group’s early PBS days, forging a bond with the singers that has lasted nearly two decades .
His style—warm, irreverent, and deeply knowledgeable—has turned his platform into a safe space where the ‘Thunder’ boys feel comfortable spilling the tea.
‘We are thrilled to have Neil back,’ Masters said in a statement. ‘He is one of Ireland’s most captivating artists, and this conversation is for the fans who have stood by him for 20 years.’
