The lone survivor of the Iowa tragedy breaks his silence after losing his mother sister and four brothers

As an Iowa community struggled to come to terms with a horrific family tragedy, the only surviving son of the accused gunman delivered an emotional tribute filled with grief, gratitude, and unexpected forgiveness.

Twenty-two-year-old Johnathan McFarland addressed mourners during a vigil Tuesday evening, just one day after authorities say his father, Ryan Willis McFarland, killed six family members before taking his own life.

Police have described the shootings as an “act of evil” that appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute. Investigators say Ryan McFarland fatally shot his wife and five children before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving Johnathan as the sole surviving member of the immediate family.

Fighting back tears, Johnathan honored those he lost, including his mother, Lesa McFarland; his sister, Ryle, 20; his brothers Mark, 16, and Ryan Jr., 13; and his half-brothers Dakota Whitlow, 32, and Austin Whitlow. The victims were discovered at several locations throughout Muscatine, Iowa.

“It’s hard to even think that this is even real. I’m still in denial,” Johnathan told the crowd, pausing as he struggled with emotion while a police officer stood nearby in support.

He said his family would remain forever in his heart and that he would continue carrying their memory with him through his prayers and daily life.

One of the most powerful moments of the vigil came when Johnathan spoke about his father despite the allegations against him.

“And this might hurt some people for me to say,” he told mourners. “No matter what is being told to me, I will always love and miss my dad, Ryan.”

Johnathan also expressed gratitude for the years he shared with his family, describing them as loving and caring people who shaped his life.

While authorities have not publicly disclosed a specific motive, police believe the killings were connected to a domestic conflict. Neighbor Melissa Weggen told the Quad-City Times that she heard Ryan McFarland making disturbing comments about money shortly before the shootings.

“I heard him walk by my house, saying, ‘Don’t worry about money. Everything goes away when you die,’” Weggen recalled.

The tragedy has also brought renewed scrutiny to McFarland’s criminal past.

Records show he was convicted of armed robbery in Illinois in 1994 and sentenced to seven years in prison. He later received an eight-year sentence after pleading guilty to a theft charge.

In the early 2000s, McFarland and his wife operated Little People Daycare & Preschool from their home. The daycare’s license was eventually revoked after an 8-month-old child died after being found unresponsive in a crib. McFarland was later charged with child endangerment resulting in death and neglect, though a plea agreement reduced the child-endangerment charge to a misdemeanor and dismissed the neglect count.

Years later, in 2019, he was convicted in a fraud case involving allegations that he tampered with vehicle odometers before selling cars.

As Muscatine continues to mourn the loss of six lives, many have been moved by Johnathan McFarland’s decision to respond to unimaginable heartbreak with a message centered on love, remembrance, and compassion.
