Chicago Sky star Angel Reese may have tried to enjoy a basketball-free offseason — but basketball clearly wasn’t done with her.
Reese revealed this week that Unrivaled, the 3×3 startup league co-founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, persistently reached out to bring her back for its second season.
“From the first day Unrivaled started, they’ve been calling me to come back,” Reese said after Sunday night’s win — her second game since rejoining Rose BC.
Initially, Reese chose not to participate when the league tipped off its new season in January. After a demanding WNBA campaign and a whirlwind offseason filled with modeling appearances, acting projects, and international promotional tours, stepping away from the court seemed like the right move.
But the calls kept coming.
Coaches checked in. Players reached out. And her Rose BC teammates — fresh off winning the league’s inaugural championship — made it clear they wanted their defensive anchor and emotional heartbeat back.
“She’s Rose basketball,” teammate Kahleah Copper said. “The culture we created was on her back.”
Eventually, Reese said yes.
She signed on to play the final three regular-season games, giving Rose BC a late-season jolt as they push toward the playoffs. The timing was almost surreal.
“Literally I was in Australia and they were like, ‘You want to come back?’” Reese said with a smile. “I was like, ‘Alright.’ Literally I was on the beach last week, and now I’m here.”
Despite not having played organized basketball for months, Reese hasn’t skipped a beat. In her first two games back, she’s already returned to form — averaging a double-double and pulling down 15 rebounds in a key win over the Laces. That victory helped Rose BC officially clinch a playoff berth.
Her immediate impact underscores why Unrivaled was so eager to bring her back. Last season, Reese earned Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the league in rebounding and setting the tone defensively. Even while balancing a growing off-court profile — from fashion to film — her identity as a dominant presence on the boards remains intact.
Now, Rose BC’s championship aspirations feel revitalized.
If the team advances through the postseason, they’ll compete in the semifinals at Barclays Center on March 2 as part of a doubleheader event. With Reese back in the fold, expectations have risen quickly.
For Reese, the return seems almost spontaneous — a quick pivot from beach days and business ventures back to the grind of professional hoops. But the seamless transition speaks to her competitive instincts.
